Burl McCoy celebrated 50 years in the practice of law in 2021. He received his undergraduate degree (Biology and History/Political Science double-majors) and his juris doctor from the University of Kentucky. Burl went on to obtain an L.L.M. from the University of Miami School of Law.
For his decades of practice, Burl has received an AV Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Rating and is recognized as a Best Lawyer and a Kentucky Super Lawyer. During his distinguished career, Burl has served as an Assistant United States Attorney, Director of Litigation for the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, and senior litigation counsel for several Lexington firms. He has been board certified by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Burl retired with the rank of Major and was awarded Distinguished Service recognition during his 24 years of service with the United States Army Reserve, Judge Advocate General Corps.
Over his five-decade career, Burl has been a member of the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys (past Governor-At-Large), the Kentucky Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys (past member of Board of Directors), the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, the American Board of Trial Advocates, NITA Advocates Association, and the Henry Clay American Inn of Court (Master of the Bench), as well as many other state and local legal organizations. He served as an adjunct professor of law at the University of Kentucky College of Law, where he taught litigation skills, and has lectured dozens of times before audiences at the Kentucky Bar Association Annual Meetings, conferences held by the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys, as well as the University of Kentucky College of Law, among other venues. Burl also co-authored a chapter entitled “Claims for Relief” in the legal treatise, Kentucky Civil Practice Before Trial.
He has notable experience in the areas of State Criminal Defense, Federal Criminal Defense, White-Collar Defense, Defense of Professionals, Defense of Public Officials, Health Care Defense, Whistleblower Suits, Administrative & Civil Cases, and Subpoenas, Internal Investigations & Special Matters.
Burl is admitted to practice in state courts throughout Kentucky as well as the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of Military Review, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and United States District Courts for the Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky.
